Into the Wild: Trekking to Khagiin Khar Lake

We’ll depart Ulaanbaatar early in the morning, traveling through a picturesque valley surrounded by forested hillsides and striking granite cliffs. This marks the beginning of our adventure, leading us across expansive valleys, rugged mountain terrain, and verdant forests. As we trek, take in the sweeping vistas that open toward the winding Tuul River.

As we follow the course of the Tuul River, the scenery begins to shift—wide valleys gradually narrow into peaceful pine forests, where stillness is broken only by birdsong or the rustle of unseen wildlife. Listen for the steady tapping of woodpeckers and watch the skies for golden eagles riding the thermals in search of prey. By late afternoon, we’ll arrive at the quiet confluence of the Tuul and Khagiin rivers, where we’ll establish camp beneath the forest canopy. With every step deeper into the wilderness, the modern world fades away, leaving only the pure, untamed beauty of nature.

Leaving the Tuul Valley behind, the trail carries us into the endless taiga—the natural domain of moose. With sharp eyes and a touch of luck, you may notice their presence: a split hoofprint pressed into soft earth, or tree bark rubbed smooth by powerful antlers. By the end of the day, you’ll find yourself reading the forest like a skilled tracker. All around, the landscape unfolds in its raw beauty—wild, pristine, and truly unforgettable.

After several hours, we ascend into the mountain’s depths, following winding trails through dense, shadowed forest teeming with wildlife—wolves, bears, deer, and the elusive moose all inhabit this untamed land. Reaching the summit, the trees give way to a sweeping panorama: Khagiin Khar Nuur glistening below, a hidden jewel cradled by the vast taiga. We pause to absorb the view before descending toward the lake’s untouched shores.

We venture further into the valley, where three pristine alpine lakes—hidden jewels of the wilderness—await discovery. Adventurous trekkers may climb the surrounding peaks for a rewarding challenge and sweeping views across the endless taiga. By evening, we reach the last lake, its still waters mirroring the soft hues of the setting sun.

After breakfast, we trek along the Khongoryn River valley, tracing its winding course for several hours. At the right crossing, we ford the stream and press deeper into the wilderness. The trail soon leads into a magnificent, forested range, where birch, pine, and ancient cedar stand tall like guardians of the land. From here, we begin a demanding climb and a steeper descent across Khaviragiin Pass, set on the eastern shoulder of Altan Olgii—poetically known as the “Golden Cradle.” At 2,646 meters, it is among the highest peaks of the Khentii range. By evening, we make camp in the quiet of the forest, beside a sparkling mountain stream.

Today we continue our trek toward Terelj, tracing the winding trail through the peaceful Dund Bayan Gol valley. As the sun sinks behind the hills, we’ll find an open clearing to set up camp, spending the night embraced by the quiet rhythm of the wilderness.

We’ll trek through the Ogoomor Valley. Today’s route is longer, but the gentle terrain allows for a relaxed journey. After crossing the Terelj River, we’ll return to the warm welcome of our host family’s home, where our vehicle awaits to take us back to Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia’s vibrant capital, concluding our unforgettable adventure through the Khentii wilderness.
