Winter national parks
Description

Mongolia’s high latitude and elevation, far from ocean influences, give it an extreme continental climate with long, bitterly cold winters. Snow mainly falls in the mountains, but blizzards often sweep across the open steppes. In January, temperatures can plunge to -40°C in the capital—making it the world’s coldest—while mountain regions drop as low as -50°C. Yet Mongolia stays accessible in winter and sees few tourists, offering a unique off-season adventure. With warm gear and preparation, you can explore its wild beauty on jeep tours, dog sleds, horseback, or camel rides. Stay in heated Gers, enjoy hearty traditional meals, sip vodka to keep warm, and experience one-of-a-kind winter festivals. Mongolia’s winter is raw, real, and unforgettable—come see it for yourself.

Tour Highlights:

• Przewalski’s Horse (Takhi)
• Hiking and nature walk along marked trails
• Opportunities to see wild horses, red deer, gazelles, and other steppe animals
• Experience the thrill of dog sledding on a frozen river.
• Enjoy a horse trek through picturesque, snow-laden valleys

Day by day itinerary

Today, we’ll drive 130 kilometers west of Ulaanbaatar to Khustain Nuruu National Park. This park is home to the rare and endangered Przewalski's Horse—also known as the Takhi—which was once extinct in the wild but has since been successfully reintroduced to its native habitat. Khustain was designated a reserve in 1993 and became a national park in 1998. Today, it supports around 350 Takhi horses, along with 459 species of vascular plants and 217 species of birds.

Upon arrival, we’ll meet the park staff and learn about the conservation project. In the afternoon, we’ll explore the park’s natural beauty by jeep, on foot, or on horseback. Due to its protected area the park supports mammals like red deer, marmots, lynx, foxes, and wolves.

Opportunities to see wild horses, red deer, gazelles, and other steppe animals. Visitor center and park staff offer insights into wildlife protection and the Takhi reintroduction project. Khustai National Park is a must-visit for nature lovers, wildlife enthusiasts, and anyone interested in Mongolia’s conservation success stories.
